women in the morning

She Woke Up Like This: Student Jackie Storr

In this series from Pretty Hurts, Petra Collins photographs six women as they prepare for their days.

College student, hostess, and dog walker Jackie Storr tries to make it out of the house in a good mood. “For school I wake up between eight and nine. It takes me, like, 20 minutes to a half an hour to just shower and get ready.”

To check her makeup, she’ll often snap a selfie, but she keeps her look minimal. “I like to wear mascara and bronzer so I have a bit of color, but I just like the natural look, sort of American Apparel–style,” she tells the Cut. “Natural beauty is most beautiful to me.”

Most of her time getting ready goes into figuring out what she’s going to wear so a bad outfit doesn’t ruin her day. “I just want to feel happy and comfortable in what I’m wearing. The more I feel that this is me and I’m not trying to be someone I’m not, then I’m pretty happy and I’m okay.”

I use my phone as an alarm. It is always in my hand. I’m always on Instagram and checking my email. I listen to music as I’m getting ready. I find that helps me a lot to be in a better mood when I’m getting ready. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of stuff on SoundCloud — Ryan Hemsworth and Lee Foss, which is like EDM.

I always wash my face and moisturize with this oil for my skin called Essence Organic. I like it a lot. I feel like my skin soaks it up. It helps a lot with dry skin and gives me a clean face.

I don’t wear that much makeup. But I usually wear mascara, if anything. I wash my hair every other day because I have curly hair. Lately I have been using Moroccanoil. I find it just smells amazing, and it makes my hair really soft.

I take selfies sometimes. My lighting is not good, so I do that in the morning to see if I look okay. Mainly it is just for my face. I’m not looking at my outfit or anything.

When I’m going out to a party or something I always look at Rihanna — her style I love. In the daytime I’m a little more vintage, relaxed. Depending on my mood, hopefully my outfit doesn’t take too long.

I always want to feel happy and comfortable in what I’m wearing, and I try not to let it bum me out if I’m not wearing the perfect outfit, but sometimes it just does, and it is hard to get out of that funk. I want to try to always be in a happy, calm mindset and find something that fits my body, even if I don’t look like this other girl that’s super pretty and she can wear this and I can’t. I don’t want that to bother me and ruin my mood for the morning, because it is sort of irrelevant.
