In 1964, Austrian-American designer Rudi Gernreich fashioned the first monokini, a topless bathing suit that left the breasts uncovered and open to the elements. After the monokini gained notoriety, Gernreich implemented his free-breasts design into daywear and eveningwear. The not-so-subtle difference between the monokini bathing suit and the monokini gown? Nipple pasties.
