Beauty is never going to be “out” in fashion, but the upcoming issue of CR Fashion Book will explore the much more intriguing concept of jolie laide. The magazine gave the Cut an inside look at one of the spreads, photographed by Brigitte Niedermair and featuring Anna Cleveland, complete with a saucy denim eyelash. (Cleveland, a Carine favorite, also happens to be one of the stars of the latest Lanvin campaign, out today.)
“In fashion, it’s always better to be an interesting person than a beautiful one,” Carine Roitfeld told the Cut. “Character is much more fascinating than pure good looks. This idea is what inspired me to dedicate an issue to ‘jolie laide,’ a term that originated in the famous Serge Gainsbourg song of the same name.” Look for issue six to hit stands in March.
