Thank you, Golden Globes, for always pitching us a curveball when we start to fear that we’re in for more of the Same Old Shenanigans. This year, it was Amal Alamuddin Clooney packing her best prom gloves, Melissa McCarthy actually admitting her dress was a “chop shop” combo of two things she already had in her closet, and nominee Rosamund Pike arriving even before the E! telecast began — a slot usually reserved for the third lead on an ensemble TV show and/or Olivia Wilde. The good news is that the red carpet also brought plenty of pretty, led by the likes of Uzo Aduba and Felicity Jones and our Patron Saint of Yes (Lupita Nyong’o). Join us as we flag the best — and the best of the worst — of what people wore.

Best Bronze: Jessica Chastain She loves a strapless gown, so we were pleased to see Chastain veering from form with a sexy halter neck. The whole retro effect felt very much like Amy Adams in American Hustle, which is a comparison we dream of and fail to achieve every day of our lives. Photo: 2015 Jeff Vespa

Oddest Debutante: Amal Alamuddin Clooney Considering she just had a high-profile wedding to an even higher-profile bachelor, it’s strange that Amal picked out gloves (from her personal collection) that look so very much like she’s coming out for the season. From a woman who willingly climbed onto a boat in a gynecological Giambattista Valli, we had hoped for more on a lot of levels. Photo: 2015 Getty Images

Worst Idea: Melissa McCarthy We were seconds away from cracking that her outfit looked like she cut up two things in her closet and sewed them together. But then she admitted it. Melissa, you are so much better than the punch line to an obvious joke. Photo: 2015 Kevork Djansezian/NBC

Biggest Surprise: Katie Holmes We’ve been waiting for both Katie and Marchesa to do something sleek and polished and grown-up. That they did it at the same time, together, is such a miracle that we just checked to see if we had a vision of the Virgin Mary in any of the items in our fridge. Photo: 2015 Kevork Djansezian/NBC

Best Disguise: Alan Cumming Congratulations to the chameleonic Mr. Cumming, who can turn so effortlessly from himself into the Cabaret emcee and then here into that pointy-toed, nude pump half of Hollywood wears when they’re too lazy to figure out what else to do. Best Excuse To Make Hacky Jokes About Her Show Title: Viola Davis This lady looks dignified and dreamy and drop-dead fab. Indeed, she’s not getting away with murder in this stunning Donna Karan; she’s actively slaying the competition. ZING. (Sorry, Viola, but we couldn’t resist.) Photo: 2015 Getty Images

Best Blue: Felicity Jones It felt like Felicity wore black for the duration of her press junkets for The Theory of Everything, so seeing her pop up for the Globes in such a glorious shade of teal was extra delightful. She looks graceful, elegant, memorable. Dior did her right. Photo: 2015 Steve Granitz

Hippie-Dippiest: Claire Danes In case you were wondering if Claire could pull off the role of Wacky Millionaire Macramé Artist Living With Her Llama in Topanga, the answer is obviously yes. Greatest Jewelry: Naomi Watts This sunny Gucci frock is gorgeous. No question. But the real star of last night's look was her tremendous Bulgari snake necklace. This is the third time she's worn it this year, but in her shoes, we'd wear it every day. Photo: 2015 Getty Images

Best J.Lo: Jennifer Lopez Who else could pull off this sparkly, over-the-top, boobalicious be-caped Zuhair Murad and still look like a goddess? No one. She is a master of the kind of self-aggrandizement that convinces you she just might be right about herself.  Photo: 2015 Kevork Djansezian/NBC

Most Confusing: Kerry Washington She had us, and then she lost us. We like the concept behind this two-toned Mary Katrantzou, and maybe if it had gone all the way to the ground, we would have been willing to make the journey with her. But it didn't, and so we stayed home, where our snacks live. Photo: 2015 Getty Images

Worst Rear View: Emma Stone If ANYONE could make a butt bow on pants look charming, it would be America’s Most Adored. The fact that she didn’t manage it suggests, therefore, that nobody can.  Photo: 2015 Jeff Vespa

Most Delightful Return to Form: Lupita Nyong'o  After last year’s awards season tour de force, Lupita broke out the more wacktacular items in her wardrobe for the rest of 2014. So we were greatly relieved by her choice: a gloriously tactile, tremendously elegant Giambattista Valli Haute Couture. Back in business, and it was grand. Photo: 2015 Getty Images
