The monocle isn’t the only age-old accessory getting a new lease on life, it seems. A group of women profiled by Racked are snapping up human-hair jewelry with the fervor of a Dickens heroine. The pieces, usually referred to as mourning jewelry, were popular in the Victorian era, and woven from the locks of a loved one. (The Met Costume Institute’s current exhibit, “Death Becomes Her,” features examples of the style, including some from the collection of Lynn Yaeger.) The enthusiasts profiled in the story say things like, “People carry a lot in their hair, a lot of energy and a lot of emotion.” For the curious, the article reveals that their annual gathering is called the Hair Ball.
