What Was Going On With the Hunched-Over Models at Margiela?

Frequently, signs backstage at runway shows encourage models to “Walk the runway like you own it,” or simply “Smile!” One at Delpozo this season bore the take-heart message, “You are great and wonderful.” We’d love to see what the ones at Maison Margiela said. For his women’s ready-to-wear debut for the rechristened house, John Galliano had some of his models sneak, creep, and hunch down the runway like they were trying to avoid detection. One cowered while clutching a paper bag; another one straight-up slunk past the front row like she was trying not, under any circumstances, to be seen. However, only five lucky models were tapped to do this bit — the rest walked normally. It’s rare to have a conversation about odd runway walks that doesn’t involve Karlie Kloss’s signature gait, but this certainly qualifies. Watch the videos below to get a sense of their odd posture.
