While Mad Men viewers might swoon over Joan’s pencil skirts and pen necklaces or Sally’s increasingly go-go fashions, Megan’s wardrobe is the most trend-conscious of all the characters’. Whether she’s wearing a Pucci micromini or a natty chevron-print coat, she always looks like she stepped out of a ‘60s magazine spread. Here, the show’s costume designer (and member of the It’s Vintage advisory panel) Janie Bryant weighs in on one of the character’s most influential outfits: the black dress she wears to sing the yé-yé tune “Zou Bisou Bisou,” originally performed by the singer Gillian Hills, in season five’s premiere.
“For Megan’s ‘Zou Bisou Bisou’ performance I wanted her costume to have great movement for dance expression, drama, and be very sexy. It was the first time for anyone to ever see a minidress on Mad Men,” Bryant told the Cut. “Megan’s minidress showed that time had passed on. It was an incredibly important moment for [the show’s] storytelling. For inspiration, I researched yé-yé girls of the time like Françoise Hardy, Anna Karina, and Chantal Goya.”
