Breaking into tears during tense professional negotiations is not necessarily career suicide, according to a new study published by the Journal of Applied Psychology. In fact, it might actually be helpful. Take that, mom and dad!
The study, called “Weep and Get More,” found that expressing sadness during negotiations can help you get what you want — but only under certain circumstances. Weeping in front of the negotiator was only considered effective if he or she perceived you as low power, expected to see you again in the future, or expected to have to collaborate with you in the future.
The findings are great news for anyone whose style is more “overemotional crybaby” than “badass ball-buster.” I’m gonna be running New York Mag in no time!
