If your mother deemed it necessary to hover a scalding comb a millimeter away from your scalp for the sake of pin-straight hair, and your hair ties were always connected to two rock-hard balls that could burrow a dent into your head, then you may have grown up black. These were a few of the reminders that echoed throughout Twitter on Tuesday with #growingupblack, a hashtag that encouraged users to post pictures that captured the ups and downs of black childhood. Black Twitter drove far down memory lane with the hashtag, with a particularly hilarious take on the torturous trials of black hair care. The Cut rounded up the funniest and most poignant examples, including flaming hair relaxers, de-tangling sessions with mom, and shampoo burns experienced over the kitchen sink.
