Which Woman Do We Want to See on the $10 Bill?

Since the Treasury’s recent announcement that, starting in 2020, a woman will grace the $10 bill, there’s been a lot of talk about who the honor should go to. A poll released earlier this week showed that most Americans favor Eleanor Roosevelt, with Harriet Tubman and Sacagawea not far behind.  Last night, at the Broadway opening of Hamilton, we asked the cast and audience what they thought of the decision to replace the play’s namesake hero on the bill (though, it should be noted: Hamilton’s image will still appear on the new bill in some form), and which women they’d like to see featured on paper currency. Read their responses below.

“Harriet Tubman. She did great things for black folks, and America. But, I wish they would replace Jackson on the twenty. I think Hamilton should keep his ten. He really has done a lot for the financial part of America, and I think to take him off so money is kind of not cool. So I want Harriet to be on the $20.”

Selenis Leyva
“Let’s see if Hillary Clinton wins. That would be amazing, if she was our first woman president, and then gets on the bill.”

James Monroe Iglehart
“This is going to sound sexist, but I think they should keep Hamilton on the $10 bill. And I think they should put out the $2 bill, and put a woman on that. I’d say, Oprah. It’s a wonderful bill, and everyone wants to collect it. If they put a woman on it, not only would they collect it, but it would never go out of circulation.”

Daveed Diggs
“Harriet Tubman’s a great choice. There are a lot of great freedom fighters who would be excellent choices. Angela Davis! We could get a little more dangerous. Though I don’t know if she’d want to be on the money. “

Aaron Tveit
“Eleanor Roosevelt could be a great one. Or Marie Curie. Or some of the women who went through the suffrage movement in the early 1900s.”

“If it can’t be me, I suppose it should be Kathy Griffin, because that’s my girl at heart. Or Joan Rivers. One of us loudmouths should do it.“

Danielle Brooks
“I think they’re thinking of Harriet Tubman, and I would love that. She represents people of color and women. I’m all for that.”

“Michelle Obama. She’s worth ten bucks, I’m thinking. While we’re at it, could we put a little color on our money? We have the most boring money in the world. As for replacing Hamilton, I truly don’t care. It’s just a bunch of old white guys.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda
“I say they’ve got five years to change their minds [about replacing Hamilton]! Let’s let Hamilton linger around for a bit, and see if [Treasury Secretary] Jack Lew changes his mind. I think the show makes a better case for keeping Hamilton than I could.”

Christopher Jackson
“Let’s keep Hamilton where he is. Andrew Jackson was a genocidal monster. Get him out. Get him out! Replace him with multiple significant Americans that actually contributed to our country. “
