The Emmys have a reputation for being the snooziest of the fashion awards shows — no VMAs-style zaniness or Oscars-esque prestige here. This time around, several attendees tried to challenge that tendency toward the same-old same-old by introducing some lesser-known labels, like Delpozo, Alexandre Vauthier, and Bouchra Jarrar, into the proceedings. Some, like Kerry Washington in brand-new Marc Jacobs and Lady Gaga sporting a look from her stylist Brandon Maxwell’s debut collection, even wore fresh-off-the-runway designs. We also saw plenty of takes on the white suit, a plethora of cutouts — especially of the triangle-shaped upper-stomach variety — and chains on two of TV’s most memorable leading ladies, Claire Danes and Taraji P. Henson. Not bad for a typically vanilla evening.

Best Bianca Jagger Tux: Tatiana Maslany in Bouchra Jarrar Though she confided she’d rather be wearing cutoffs (wouldn’t we all), Maslany carried off the tricky open-to-the-navel smoking look in white. Additional props for picking Jarrar, a fashion insider’s favorite.

Henson in custom Alexander Wang Henson and Wang must have hit it off when she wore his designs to this year’s Met Ball — she looked great in his understated black gown with chunky chain straps and a bodice cutout. Basically, this is how the Wang girl does the red carpet. (Let's all ignore the fact that it inspired a terrible double entendre from Ryan Seacrest.)

Best '70s Inspiration: Aubrey Plaza in Alexandre Vauthier Can someone cast Plaza in a remake of Saturday Night Fever, posthaste? She adapts well to the decade's glitzy, Studio 54–specific style, which also happened to be a major trend on the spring runways.

Game of Thrones–Esque: Laura Prepon in Christian Siriano Did Prepon forget what show she’s on? We understand the need to break out of the drab standard-issue jumpsuit she wears onscreen, but this beaded capelet takes things a bit too far in the Mother of Dragons direction. Project Runway Reject: Heidi Klum in Versace The designers on this season of the show may not have been “up to snuff,” as Klum put it, but her canary-yellow Versace gown probably wouldn’t have won any of the challenges, either. It also earned her plenty of Big Bird comparisons on Twitter. Photo: Steve Granitz/2015 Steve Granitz

Most Arresting Newcomer: Jaimie Alexander in Giorgio Armani Privé Her tattoo-themed crime show may look — what's the word? — dumb, but Alexander smartly opted for a dress that would get her noticed among the familiar faces on the red carpet. Her multicolored, sequined Armani couture dress has more gradations and complexities than most network TV shows.

Well, good thing Washington used her Olivia Pope skills to get her hands on this silver dress from the designer's spring 2016 show just after it made its runway debut.

Most Va-Va-Voom: Christina Hendricks in Naeem Khan Hendricks tends to look better in her Mad Men wardrobe than she does on the red carpet — without Janie Bryant's assistance, she seems to falter. But she's striding into a post-Joan existence looking great in a regal Naeem Khan gown.

Rockstar Dress Minus the Rockstar: Claire Danes in Prada Danes, who tends to stick to muted Narciso Rodriguez for her awards-show outings, took a risk with her sequined, chain-embellished Prada gown, and didn't stick the landing. This is a cool dress for someone, but Danes looks like she just wants to slink back into her monochromatics.

Most Bridesmaid-y: Amy Schumer in Zac Posen We wanted more from Amy Schumer — her post-gym updo and strapless gown didn’t quite live up to the confident fashion statements she made on the Trainwreck circuit. And any dress that calls for this much adjustment probably needed to be rethought.

Most Unexpected Moment from a Mom Brand: Sofia Vergara in St. John We associate St. John with well-heeled moms and grandmas, not with small-screen sirens being squired by Magic Mike heartthrobs. But Vergara is definitely changing our perspective.
