How to Dress for the Emmys When You’re a Writer

For A-list celebrities, dressing for awards season is a months-long production consisting of stylists, nutritionists, and trainers. But what if you’re not Claire Danes or Matthew McConaughey? This season the Cut helped two of our friends dress for the biggest night in television. Josh Gondelman, author of You Blew It, was nominated for his work on John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, while Jessica Williams joined the rest of her castmates on The Daily Show in celebrating two Emmy wins.

Like most guys, Josh simply required a tailored tuxedo. He chose a navy J.Crew one and skipped the bow tie in favor of a classic skinny tie. Jessica decided on a formfitting Gustavo Cadile gown in black and gold that was an instant hit the moment she slipped it on — especially once she saw the rear view. We gave her a ton of skinny rings by Ileana Makri, Maria Black, and Selin Kent in addition to bracelets by Phillips House and Ash & Ames. And to round out the look we added on slim, dangly Selin Kent earrings that contrasted nicely against her septum piercing.
