The Perfect French Surf Spray

Photo: David Mallett

If you are very lucky in Paris, you get your hair done at David Mallett. He is the legendary French-by-way-of-Australia hairstylist who counts Charlotte Gainsbourg, Carla Bruni, and Clémence Poésy’s shiny heads as clients. But if you are neither lucky nor in Paris, you can still consider his surf spray, one of few products that bears his name. Unlike most surf sprays, this one is pleasingly non-sticky but still adds grip and texture to the hair without drying it into a snarled knot. The secret is the actual salt in its formulation: The spray is made out of Murray River salt from New South Wales, Australia, which contains a high level of magnesium and calcium content, actually soothing and, purportedly, strengthening hair. Spray it on and scrunch the ends, either on wet or damp hair, as you can see in Mallett’s instructional YouTube video. And voilà! Shiny, déshabillé, French anti-sausage curls.
