Did the ‘Maxipad Bandit’ Really Think He’d Escape?

When a person attempts to rob an auto-parts store, the default sartorial choice for disguise is the trusty black balaclava. This generally does the trick in terms of minimal face recognition. But what’s a robber to do when no full-face mask is available and the robbery must go down? One man, 51-year-old Gary Victor, reached for the closest thing he could find: a supersize sanitary napkin.

After very publicly casing an auto-parts store in Apple Valley, California, in broad daylight, Victor returned later wearing a maxi-pad over his face, stealing a bunch of battery chargers. While Victor’s eyes were certainly covered, the rest of him was caught in crystal-clear video that store owners then matched to the video of him in the store earlier. Doy.

Trish Hill, a spokeswoman for the Apple Valley Police Department told NBC Los Angeles, “It wasn’t surprising, but yes, that is in fact what he was trying to conceal his identity with, and he didn’t do a very good job.” At least he didn’t try a tampon.
