During her visit to the University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Caitlyn Jenner did a Q&A session with the audience, in which one person asked why she didn’t join a more liberal party, reported local blog Billy Penn.
“I have gotten more flak for being a Republican than I have for being trans,” Jenner replied.
The panel’s moderator, Vanity Fair’s Buzz Bissinger, added a noteworthy remark: “Just because you change gender doesn’t mean you change your core beliefs.”
Just a few months ago, Ellen DeGeneres challenged Jenner on her conservative views and asked why she seemed a little iffy on the whole same-sex-marriage issue.
“I don’t want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness. That’s not my job. If that word marriage is really, really that important to you, I can go with it,” Jenner told DeGeneres then.
It’s not hard to figure why Jenner gets the criticism she does, but Bissinger might have just won this whole exchange: Transitioning genders does not require one to declare a new party affiliation. Over and done.
