Fashion Month has wrapped, the big ideas are forming, and the moods of the upcoming season are falling into place. Spring’s maximalism is still floating in the ether, with sequins dripping everywhere and ‘80s excess coming on strong, but it’s evolved for cooler weather. Designers offered new takes on traditional outerwear, like feathery puffers made in velvet or covered in feathers. Dressing up became a little more casual, with layered tees paired under gowns, but paradoxically also more constrained, given the return of the corset.

All of this seem like too much? You may very well be seeing spots (in leopard form), but wearable trends like tartans, military jackets, and great shearling will help even it all out. Click the slideshow below to see the season’s 12 biggest trends and start planning your fall wardrobe now.

Leopard Spots The print of the season came in the form of leopard spots. Prowling the runways at Bottega Veneta, Prada, and Givenchy, among others, the look ranged from the ladylike coat at Dior to the masculine vibes at Dries Van Noten.

The New Evening Look Evening attire will lean toward a more casual, cozier look come fall, with turtlenecks, pants, and tees layered underneath cocktail dresses and gowns, as seen at Valentino and Chanel. Consider investing in a simple black turtleneck or white tee to update a favorite dress.

Haute Puffers Puffers got an upgrade, whether in velvet at Stella McCartney, embellished with feathers at Marc Jacobs, worn over the glitziest of tops at Balenciaga, or trimmed in marabou like a princess's duvet at Alexander McQueen.

Waist Trainers Waist definition, specifically corsets, drew the gaze to the midriff, seemingly the erogenous zone du jour. At Alexander McQueen and Brock Collection, they nodded to fairy tale heroines. At Louis Vuitton and Loewe, they were molded and slightly futuristic. And at Prada, they were laced-up and layered over nearly every look.

Supersize Me Subtlety is not the word to describe fall's accessories. Oversize shoes, bags, jewels and belts made a big statement. Platforms inched much higher at Marc Jacobs, furry trapper hats spanned wider at Louis Vuitton, and bags were Ikea-size at Balenciaga.

The Military Jacket Unlike the typical surplus jacket, the military jackets for fall are a little more jazzed-up. At Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli, frogging details were done in decorative gold cording or paired with fur and velvet trimmings. Prada and Burberry offered slightly more commercial offerings, should you prefer a tonal coat with a big fur hood or bold red piping and gold buttons.

Totally '80s The opulence of Robert Palmer girls returned, with no ruffle left unfrilled. While it's questionable whether the masses will don the Madonna-esque Moschino taffeta or glam, big-shouldered '80s-couture shapes from Saint Laurent, the aesthetic's timing is uncanny in this era of Trump antics.

New Volumes If '80s body-con isn't quite your look, exaggerated volumes, like enlarged shoulders and boxy silhouettes, were shown at Vetements, Comme des Garçons, and Saint Laurent. The new proportions could likely be the next in look-at-me street style.

Shearling Add a great shearling jacket to the list of covetable fall items. Luxuriously supple at Hermès or crackled into a worn-in look at Maison Margiala and Marc Jacobs, the look felt highly desirable.

Vinyl Shine Slick, shining vinyl and patent leathers added a glossy finish to Fashion Month. In siren red at Isabel Marant and Louis Vuitton or in gleaming black at Kenzo and Lanvin, the effect was like Sin City come to life. Less aggressive in hue — but still quite perverse — was the bubble-gum pink at Comme des Garçons.

All-Over Sequins Last season's silvery shine has exploded into a shower of rainbow sequins. They were everywhere, from Michael Kors Collection to Erdem to Gucci to Sonia Rykiel. And they're ideal for lazy evening attire: All one has to do is dress like a disco ball.

Plaid Checks and tartans nodding to the British aristocracy were seen in all four cities during Fashion Month (see Calvin Klein Collection, Burberry, Bottega Veneta, and Chanel). In mostly sophisticated neutral shades, they were a calm antidote to the bolder sequins and vinyl being shown simultaneously.
