Madeline Stuart is a 19-year-old Australian, and the first professional adult model with Down Syndrome. This past year she walked in the Hendrik Vermuelen show during September’s New York Fashion Week and become the face of cosmetics company Glossigirl. Her latest work, a romantic bridal shoot in Virginia, expands the idea of what makes for a model bride.
Isadora Martin-Dye and her husband Ben Rinder, who own the Rixey Manor venue in Virginia where the photos were shot, planned the series as a way to bring greater diversity to the world of wedding models. “A lot of newly engaged women cannot see themselves as a bride because all the images magazines use are of these tall, thin models,” said Martin-Dye in a statement about the shoot. “I think that being a bride is a life experience that every woman should be able to see herself doing — and definitely not stressing about the fact that they wont look ‘perfect’ on their wedding day.”
Sarah Houston, who photographed the shoot, echoed that sentiment. “I honestly just wanted to show that no bride is cookie cutter,” she wrote on her blog. “She proved that you don’t have to be the typical 5’9” skinny bride that graces every bridal magazine and blog.”
