Report: The New York Times Doesn’t Own the Rights to Bill Cunningham’s Photos

The New York Times dedicated this weekend’s “Sunday Styles” section to Bill Cunningham — who passed away late last month — complete with tributes from those who worked with him. However, in case you were wondering why the supplement didn’t contain any of the photographer’s photos, aside from the scans of his columns in full, it’s because the images are supposedly tied up in rights issues.

According to a “Page Six” source, the late photographer did not leave a will, meaning that “the Times is currently legally forbidden from running any more photos by him.” We’ve reached out to a Times spokesperson for a comment on the matter and will update this when we hear back.
