While accepting the award for designer of the year at the Accessories Council’s ACE Awards on Tuesday, Coach creative director Stuart Vevers quietly took a jab at Donald Trump’s xenophobia and England’s Brexit.
Vevers, a Brit who came to the U.S. in 2013 when he took over design duties at Coach, thanked the American fashion industry for welcoming him into its ranks. “America has been so welcoming and open-minded toward me in my time here, the press, the stores, have all been open to change and have embraced someone and something new and different,” he told the crowd at Cipriani 42nd Street. “That’s what I always loved about America growing up, and about fashion. And I hope America continues to open its doors to outsiders like me in the future.”
