For New York’s Fall Fashion issue, photographer Bobby Doherty reimagined the season’s most colorful looks on a cast of waitresses from around New York City. By turning clothing upside down (or inside out), the portfolio offers a new way of thinking about the clothes that we wear, and reminds us that at the end of the day, fashion is all about the people who wear it.

Click through the gallery ahead to see skirts worn as tops, gloves as scarves, coats turned inside out, and more off-the-menu styles.

Styling by Rebecca Ramsey. Casting by Boom Productions Inc., Tirzah Brott, and Marisa Chafetz; makeup by Paco Blancas at L’Atelier NYC using Nars cosmetics; hair by Siobhan Benson using Oribe. Fashion assistant: Indya Brown.

I don’t so much feel like I’m on display, but I do feel like people try to walk over me. But I don’t let it bother me. I know that I’m worth more than how people treat me.” Photo: Bobby Doherty/New York Magazine
