This 18-Year-Old Swam for Her Life in Syria, And Now She’s Swimming in Rio


After her country’s war left her homeless, 18-year-old Yusra Mardini and her sister fled Syria and began a 25-day trek that landed her in Germany, where she’s training to compete as part of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team. She’ll be a part of a ten-member squad that includes one other swimmer from Syria, two judo fighters from the Democratic Republic of Congo, five runners from South Sudan, and a marathon runner from Ethiopia — all with remarkable stories.
