In the bonkers Australian film The Dressmaker, Kate Winslet is iconic in technicolor wiggle dresses contrasted against the bleached-out alien terrain of the Australian outback. She pops as Tilly Dunnage, a former outcast turned glamorous European dressmaker, who’s back in town for a little vengeance. She also catches the eye of a bloke played by Liam Hemsworth, whose abs are lovingly caressed by the film’s decidedly female gaze, courtesy of director Jocelyn Moorhouse.
Winslet, who walked the red carpet at a special New York screening presented by London Fog and later enjoyed the after-party at Avra Madison, admitted that she’s also used fashion for revenge. “I was very bullied as a child by not very nice girls,” she replied, “And every time I feel like I’m wearing a lovely dress and I’m standing on a red carpet, there’s a part of me that goes, ‘Ha-ha!’ There’s a part of me that just feels like, ‘And … where are you?’ I know that sounds completely pathetic, but it’s true!”
Stars! They’re just as messy as we are.
