strange fantasies

This Is You at Work, Reincarnated As a Fancy Purse

What if you were an actual leather purse — a purse person — going to the office and scanning purses at the copier and microwaving $795 purses to eat for lunch? That is the strange, oddly luxurious fantasy in this new video from Los Angeles–based design studio Building Block. You’re typing emails in purse letters. Your afternoon snack comes from a purse vending machine:

Recently selected to premiere at the Berlin Fashion Film Festival, director Georgia Tribuiani’s clip gives a cheeky career-woman nod to Building Block’s minimalist aesthetic, which focuses on simply structured handbags in rich, neutral colors like black and creamy white. The video also celebrates the brand’s recent move from a shared workplace (where designer-sister duo Kimberly and Nancy Wu previously worked for five years) to a permanent storefront this summer.

Located in what was once a Chinatown bookstore in downtown L.A., the new 2,000-square-foot studio was designed by Iko Iko. It’s now a retail space where customers can schedule sales appointments and peruse an edited assortment of Building Block handbags and accessories.

The new L.A. store is open Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
