The Nasty Gal Founder’s New Book Is Like a Fancy Instagram Mood Board

Of all the inspirations, photographs, and short essays in Sophia Amoruso’s new coffee-table compendium Nasty Galaxy, out October 4 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons, you could say the mint-green illustrations by Tuesday Bassen are her most practical pieces of advice yet, including: HOW TO GO COMMANDO, HOW TO MUTE YOUR POOP, and HOW TO WRITE A THANK-YOU NOTE.

The Nasty Gal founder collected her many inspirations for a book that reads like a mood board. Among album covers, horoscopes, and photos of her favorite rooms (she based her bedroom design on a pair of vintage suede shorts), Amoruso includes interviews with Audrey Gelman, Leandra Medine, Gwyneth Paltrow, Peggy Noland, and other prominent businesswomen as a “Portraits of a GirlBoss” feature throughout the book. In a “Bad Bitches of Music” column, she profiles iconic performers like Grace Jones and Bette Davis.

Click ahead to preview inspirations from the book, including a vintage rotary phone made into a purse, tips on negotiating, and the items of clothing Amoruso thinks you can’t live without.

TIPS ON NEGOTIATING · You blow it the second you drive up in an expensive car, so just don’t. · When in doubt, wink. · It’s easier to negotiate for things other people don’t want. · Have cash on hand in case you’re dealing with someone who is comfortable evading taxes. · Bundle, bundle, bundle! · Go so low you insult them a little, but never a lot. · Leverage is everything: Are there other opportunities waiting in the wings? On the flip side, can you offer things in addition to cash? No blowjobs or family heirlooms. · Comparison shop! · Be willing to walk away. · If you aren’t in a position to walk away, try the above and if you fail, agree to their terms and for Christ’s sake, withhold the tears until you are alone.
