Documentary filmmaker and artist Timothy Greenfield-Sanders began his “list” documentary series over ten years ago, starting with The Black List: Volume 1, which asked prominent African-Americans to tell their stories. Since then, he’s released The Latino List, The Out List, and The Women’s List, among others. His latest project, The Trans List, to be released December 5 on HBO, is a collection of films and portraits of trans activists.
In interviews, Buck Angel, Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner, and many others speak openly about their transitions and experiences. Greenfield-Sanders shot portraits of each subject against a slate-gray backdrop and paired each image with filmed interviews. The Trans List documentary premieres on HBO on Monday, December 5, at 8 p.m. EST.

“At first glance, this is a classic ‘beefcake’ pose. But when you learn Buck’s full story, this image is much more complex and layered.” —Timothy Greenfield-Sanders
“In the film, Alok speaks of the freedom to self-determine one’s own gender each and every day. Here, Alok shows fierce intellect, determination, and a madcap sense of color.” —Timothy Greenfield-Sanders
