Inspired by her mother’s colorful costume jewelry, Iris Apfel started collecting jewelry at age 11. Today, the 95-year-old style icon designs jewelry (for her Home Shopping Network line) and sells pieces from her personal collection with Rachel Shechtman, CEO of STORY, a retail project housed in a 2,000-square-foot Chelsea gallery.
The women met about two years ago while working together on the female-driven installation “Her STORY.” Since then, they have met at Apfel’s apartment to peruse her vast jewelry collection and select items to sell (their last trunk show in September completely sold out).
Apfel will host her next trunk show at STORY on Friday. Jewels include a lizard-shaped brooch and brightly colored statement necklaces, ranging from $45 to $850. Apfel will make an appearance on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. The night also promotes STORY’s current installation, “Home for the Holidays,” a gift guide brought to life as a house with rooms corresponding to gifts for her, him, the kids, and foolproof items for everyone, on view through December 31.
