Women Banned Members of a Mens-Only Golf Club From Sitting on This Bench

In May, members of the Edinburgh mens-only Muirfield Golf Club — one of the last of its kind in Scotland — voted to uphold a policy prohibiting women from membership. And so, the “female population” of Edinburgh decided to fight back, by banning those men from a park bench.

As the Telegraph reports, a new plaque on a bench in Edinburgh’s West Princes Street Gardens was spotted over the weekend. The plaque reads, “The members of Muirfield Golf Club are hereby excluded from sitting on this bench. By the order of the female population.” An image of the bench has since been making the rounds on social media.

Alas, as all good things must come to an end, the BBC reports that an Edinburgh City Council spokesperson said the plaque will be removed, as it was added without permission. We may not have true equality, but at least we had this bench.

This post was updated to reflect that the plaque will be removed.
