Last night, New York toasted the magazine’s 50th anniversary with Champagne and pastrami at Katz’s Deli on the Lower East Side.
“From its earliest days, the magazine Clay Felker and Milton Glaser created reflected all the energy and ambition of this place, chronicling and in a sense inventing the idea of the great American city,” CEO Pam Wasserstein said.
As the deli lights at Katz’s dimmed, noted guests, many who have been profiled by the magazine — Eliot Spitzer, Lena Waithe, Zachary Quinto, Jim Gaffigan, and Don Lemon — noshed knishes and rugalach. Around the room, contributors from throughout the magazine’s 50-year history, including Gail Sheehy, Frank Rich, Kurt Andersen, and Andrew Sullivan, caught up on the day’s news. DJ Spinderella provided the soundtrack.
“We are proud to carry the flag for New York values, for the values of cities, never more so than right now, when those values find themselves in crazy combat over the meaning of America itself,” New York editor-in-chief Adam Moss said last night.

Jim Gaffigan: The energy and the convenience is really amazing. It's like: You know Central Park is there. You don’t necessarily use it, but it's good to know it's there. You know if you wanted to go out to dinner at 2 a.m., it's not going to be an issue. Photo: Sylvain Gaboury/Sylvain Gaboury/PMC

Emma Myles Is there something that has kept you here over the years?Emma Myles: I tried to leave. In 2012, things were bad, and that’s when I got Orange. I came here to be an actor. I had been here for 12 years at that point, and I was like, I gave you my 20s. What do I have to show for it? So I started the process of leaving. I sent everything I owned to my mother’s house in California and I bought a one-way ticket, and two weeks before I was supposed to leave, I auditioned for Orange and I booked it. I felt like New York and the universe were telling me to leave, but really it was an ultimatum: What are you going to do? Where is your heart going to be? Pat KiernanIs there a specific thing that has kept you in the city all of these years?Pat Kiernan: I get up at 3 a.m. so my commute needs to be as short as possible. I love living in the city and not the suburbs, but if there is one thing that's my glue to the city, it’s that I don’t want a longer commute at 4 a.m. Photo: Sylvain Gaboury/Sylvain Gaboury/PMC

Zachary Quinto You're back and forth between New York and L.A. Is there a thing you need when you get back?Zachary Quinto: Probably my neighborhood restaurant, which is on my block. We go there probably three times a month. We’ve gotten out of the car [after traveling] and put our bags down and walked there.

Jordan KlepperIs there an object, item, or service that you really appreciate and can only get in New York?Jordan Klepper: One of those vinyl couches that are in New York bars that are covered in duct tape. In New York I actually trust those more than I trust other ones, because it means they have been there for a while. In Brooklyn, where I lived up until a few months ago, that was something that felt very New York. I love the shitty couch.

Julie Klausner Is there a specific thing that has kept you here over the years or you would miss if you left?Julie Klausner: I always like being here for snow storms. I remember being in L.A. and hearing there was a big snow storm and being really jealous that I wasn’t here, if only because snow storms are a good excuse to stay inside and watch movies and no one calls you lazy. I love it when people stock up on food. It is such a charade. But there is nothing like going to a bodega and being like, I might need this can of beans. You don’t need blizzard bodega beans! No one ever does.

Eliot Spitzer, Roxana Girand Is there something that has kept you here all of these years?Eliot Spitzer: Central Park on the weekends. The reservoir when the sun is coming up or the sun is going down. East, West and it is just staggeringly beautiful. You walk through the park, and it is just staggeringly beautiful. I was there this morning.

Desus Nice, The Kid Mero Is there a thing that keeps you in New York that you love and couldn’t get anywhere else?Desus Nice: Other cities are fine, but there is an unspoken energy in New York, like a vibe. When you're driving in from New Jersey, you start to feel it. When you come to New York, you recharge your battery, and that energy is what you use to hustle and get through the day.
What keeps you in New York? The Kid Mero: The Bronx in particular. I got on the bus the other day and I was just like, Fuck it, I’m going to take the 40 bus up Tremont. I was looking at the graffiti and seeing all the stuff that is still there from 20 years ago or whatever, and I thought, if I bounced out of here, I’d be in Calabasas crying, ‘I miss that bodega cat that used to rub himself on my leg.’

Simon Doonan, Kurt Andersen Is there something specific that has kept you in New York for so many years?Simon Doonan: There’s this phenomenon I read an article about called group effervescence where people need to be around other people to feel alive and feel life-affirming. Crowds are life-affirming, physically and emotionally, and you get that here. Every day, I walk my dog down to Washington Square Park and there’s this feeling of group effervescence I read about in National Geographic. I didn’t come up with it myself.
