The Crazy Rich Asians Red Carpet Was Delightfully Over-the-Top

Much has been said about the historic significance of Crazy Rich Asians, including imagining what the red-carpet premiere would look like. Last night’s event, held at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, felt like any other high-profile evening except that the celebrities were mainly of Asian descent — a thrilling rarity that felt equally as momentous as the movie itself.

The leads of the movie, Constance Wu and Henry Golding, went straight for Old Hollywood glamour. Golding opted for head-to-toe Tom Ford, including a sharp mint-green dinner jacket, while Wu chose a Ralph & Russo dress that nodded at the theme of the evening in the form of dramatic tassels. Gemma Chan, who plays the incredibly stylish Astrid in the movie, continued her well-dressed streak. Throughout the press tour, Chan’s been making an effort to highlight designers of Asian descent, and her sparkly Oscar de la Renta number was a nod to the brand’s co-creative director, Korean-American Laura Kim.

Of course premieres usually call for big, over-the-top gowns as well. Sonoya Mizuno’s spring 2007 Alexander McQueen dark floral dress was a highlight, as was Constance Lau’s modern spin on the traditional chipao, custom made in Singapore. Kris Aquino, who’s a massive celebrity in her native Philipines, opted to support designer Michael Leyva, a fellow Filipino, in a voluminous yellow creation.

As for the men, they weren’t exactly slouches. Chris Pang and Nico Santos also wore fancy dinner jackets, while Pierre Png and Harry Shum Jr. went for seasonally appropriate light suits. And while Steven Yeun didn’t dress up, he gets extra points for looking extremely cute in his glasses.

Scroll down to see everyone in their evening best.
