Why in the World Do Men Think They Can Beat Serena Williams?

According to a poll from YouGov, an international data and analytics group, one in eight men believe they could score a point in a tennis match against Serena Williams. Yes, you read that right. There are men out there who believe they could face off against a Wheaties box–level athlete and not embarrass themselves. How embarrassing!

The poll, which surveyed 1,732 adults in Great Britain, posed a simple question: “Do you think if you were playing your very best tennis, you could win a point off Serena Williams?”

While the reasonable response would have been “OF COURSE NOT??” from 100 percent of participants, the results revealed a more delusional grasp of reality. Twelve percent of men surveyed responded, “I think I could,” along with 3 percent of women.

The confidence level of these men is confounding. Even if they were all somehow tennis players with years of experience, along with the athletic prowess and coolheadedness to take on Serena, what makes them think they could pull one over on one of the greatest athletes in the world?

In addition, 14 percent of men and 10 percent of women responded that they “don’t know” if they could win a point against Williams. How are they unsure? Sorry, but if you’re not sure how you would fair against Serena Williams in a tennis match, you’re lying to yourself.
