Before, there was space, air in which to breathe, dream, dance. Now, there is none. The world is smaller, darker. Yes, as the Cut reported earlier this week, 50 Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson’s gap tooth has closed. Everyone is mourning the terrible loss, including the gap’s landlady, Dakota Johnson.

“I’m really sad about it, too,” Johnson told Jimmy Fallon during an interview on Tuesday. She didn’t want to get rid of her gap, she explained, but the loss was the inevitable result of combining a human body with orthodontia, and the relentless passage of time.

“I had a permanent retainer since I was 13, and it was just glued to the back of my teeth,” she told Fallon, her teeth pressed closed together. “I was having a lot of neck problems recently so my orthodontist, she decided it would be a good idea to take it off and see if my jaw expanded, and it helped me. And my gap closed by itself.”

Then the two briefly discussed Fallon’s veneer, and touched each other’s teeth, but before Fallon could move on, Johnson added, “Anyway, hold on, this is really important: I’m sad about my gap tooth too so I’d really appreciate some privacy at this time.”

There is hope, though. Johnson assured fans, “It’s gonna come back.” She’s not exactly sure how — maybe other, tooth separating retainers.

Here’s a song her consciously coupled boyfriend Chris Martin could sing to her if she gets a new, gapping retainer.
