Imagine Kristen Stewart As Shakespeare’s Juliet

Ever since the Pirelli Calendar broadened its horizons beyond just naked portraits, the annual collection of images (funded by the Italian tire company) has become more theatrical, more diverse, more raw, and honestly, way more exciting to look at. Not only does it capture the world’s biggest celebrities and fashion models in a new light, it also allows them to explore new characters and roles they might not on the stage, runway, or screen.

This year, photographer Paolo Roversi recast a range of different actresses and singers, including Kristen Stewart, the Spanish singer Rosalía, Pose actress Indya Moore, and the Chinese singer Chris Lee as Juliet from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

For the project, titled “Looking for Juliet,” the subjects were invited to present the kind of Juliet they would portray in an “ideal casting session.” In other words, they were asked to think beyond Claire Danes. (Although who doesn’t love Claire Danes?) Stewart is, of course, a broody Juliet; Rosalía a fiery queen, in a bright-red gown; and Moore looks serious and somber, in all black.

Shot in Paris and Verona (of course) over a week in May, Roversi was inspired by his own search for a muse: “I am still searching for my Juliet and I will be searching all my life. Because Juliet is a dream,” he said.

Go behind the scene’s of fashion’s most-celebrated calendar, known as “the Cal,” below.
