Inside One of the Last Bohemian Homes in Hotel Chelsea

By

Artist and hairdresser Gerald DeCock has been living in the Hotel Chelsea for the past 25 years. He is one of about 50 remaining residents in this storied hotel, which, in its heyday, was home to cultural icons such as Andy Warhol, Patti Smith, and Jim Morrison. Today, however, the hotel is enduring its eighth year of renovations before being transformed into a luxury hotel.

Photographer Colin Miller documents DeCock’s colorful loft (and those of other residents) for his new book, Hotel Chelsea, which releases November 14. Miller joins DeCock in his loft to discuss the space and what life’s like in one of the last remaining havens for the city’s bohemian coterie.
