In the winter months, shopping for clothes and accessories can feel a little like looking for an apartment. When I’m scrolling through cozy sweaters, warm coats, and big boots, I’m thinking less about aesthetics and more about practical life. In other words, I’m only spending my money on things that provide a satisfying answer to the question: Can I live in you?

These knee-high black boots from Isabel Marant answer that question with a resounding “yes.” My first impulse upon seeing them is to dive headfirst into their soft suede opening. They check off all the boxes: comfortable, warm, and sophisticated. It’s no surprise that Marant — patron saint of French-girl fashion — is the designer behind them. They look easy, but you’ll notice an adjustable snap clasp at the top that keeps them slouched, but not too slouched. They’ve also got the slightest triangular heel, making them a little vintage, but also unlike most of the other boots out there right now. You can wear them on the weekend, or to work, or with a black turtleneck dress to something fancy. Like I said, you can live in them.
