A Stylist’s Designer Picks for Every Type of Spring Weather

Photo: Courtesy of Nordstrom

The phrase “spring fashion” brings to mind a magical time, when we collectively retire our puffer coats and live in flippy floral sundresses and barely-there sandals until September. But in New York, the reality of spring isn’t so much “70 and sunny on a summer Friday.” It’s the kind of wildly unpredictable weather that can have you ducking a mini-hailstorm in the morning, and peeling off layers by midday.

Luckily, the most stylish New Yorkers are undaunted by “who even knows” spring weather — like fashion editor and stylist Haley Loewenthal. She might be styling a runway show today, on set with big-deal clients tomorrow, and rushing all around the city to market appointments in between — but she’s always the master of looking effortlessly cool and put-together, no matter the weather. Haley’s secret? She shops the designer collections at Nordstrom, featuring an expertly curated selection of the most covetable luxury fashion brands anywhere. Ahead, Haley puts together four spring outfits that’ll look amazing, no matter how wild your weather app is being.

For a Beach Getaway

I usually take a trip to Jamaica in early spring and my ideal vacation look is one that can take me from the beach to a sit-down lunch in no time. I love this Zimmerman swimsuit: It’s so flattering, and with some clever layering — like adding an oversized shirt and elegant, wide-leg linen pants — it doubles as a bodysuit (more room in your luggage for souvenirs!). Add lightweight sandals, sunglasses, and a Loewe woven tote for a look that’s chic from the city streets to the boardwalk.

1. Chloé Tally 53mm Octagon Sunglasses, $420 at Nordstrom. 2. Brunello Cucinelli Seersucker Stripe Shirt, $1,445 at Nordstrom. 3. Chloé Connie Pendant Necklace, $460 at Nordstrom. 4. Zimmerman Super Eight Wide Leg Linen Trousers, $595 at Nordstrom. 5. Zimmerman One Shoulder Bow One-Piece Swimsuit, $350 at Nordstrom. 6. Chloé Logo Slide Sandal, $370 at Nordstrom. 7. Loewe Small Logo Straw Tote, $450 at Nordstrom.

For a Day Packed with Meetings

On days when I’m running to market appointments from morning to night, I need pieces that are practical and stylish. This Burberry coat is a classic trench made to perfection — it protects me from the elements in the chicest possible way. A cashmere sweater and swingy pleated midi skirt are so easy to move in for a hectic day on the go. And I’ve always loved this iconic Loewe bag, but in this color — wow! A crossbody bag is a must for spring — it keeps my hands fully accessible to tote an umbrella, or hail a cab if need be.

1. Prada Embellished Barrette, $340 at Nordstrom. 2. Loewe Mini Puzzle Leather Bag, $1,990 at Nordstrom. 3. Burberry Kensington Long Trench Coat, $1,990 at Nordstrom. 4. Khaite Nelley Ribbed Cashmere Sweater, $820 at Nordstrom. 5. Co Essentials Pleated Midi Skirt, $695 at Nordstrom. 6. Chloé Sonnie Low Top Sneaker, $620 at Nordstrom.

For an All-Day Photoshoot

My on-set days start early — 6AM calltime, anyone? — so being comfortably put-together is key. Jeans and a T-shirt is a no-brainer outfit, but my work calls for the most elevated version of each. Acne Studios is my go-to for the most stylish, durable denim, and this Balenciaga logo tee is a cool twist on the closet staple. Add a timeless Gucci cardigan, Prada’s on-trend lug-sole boots, and a ladylike Chloé tote, and you have an outfit that’s easy to wear without sacrificing an ounce of style.

1. Sophie Buhai Tiny Heart Pendant Necklace, $475 at Nordstrom. 2. Prada Lug Chelsea Rain Boot, $850 at Nordstrom. 3. Balenciaga Logo Graphic Tee, $450 at Nordstrom. 4. Acne Studios 1997 Straight Leg Jeans, $320 at Nordstrom. 5. Gucci Logo Patch Cable Wool Cardigan, $1,400 at Nordstrom. 6. Chloé Button Detail Long Trench Coat, $3,150 at Nordstrom. 7. Chloé Small C Convertible Leather Bag, $1,850 at Nordstrom.

For a Rainy-Day Brunch

I’d never let a little rain keep me from my favorite brunch spot. With the right pieces, it’s easy to show up feeling stylish, without sporting the drenched look. This oversized Ganni jacket looks great layered with a cozy hooded sweater and straight-leg jeans. And is there anything cuter than a bucket hat on a rainy day? I’m in love with the iconic Burberry print and this takes any outfit up a notch. This Chloé boot is a perfectly disguised rain boot, so when the weather clears, your outfit still looks on point.

1. Ganni Double Hem Jacket, $450 at Nordstrom. 2. Burberry Heavy Check Bucket Hat, $320 at Nordstrom. 3. Chloé Betty Rain Boot, $495 at Nordstrom. 4. Chloé Aby Small Day Canvas Shoulder Bag, $2,290 at Nordstrom. 5. Khaite Kerrie Straight Leg Jeans, $380 at Nordstrom. 6. Ganni Oversize Hoodie Sweater, $340 at Nordstrom.
