Drag Shows Are a Happy Distraction

There are plenty of ways to fill the free time during social distancing: learning how to cut your hair, having a virtual movie night, texting your ex. But to all my 9-to-5 friends who are never able to make it out on a school night for a drag show, might I suggest you dig into your fresh stash of weed, get all dressed up like you’re hitting the town, and tune in to livestream entertainment from drag queens from the comfort of your apartment?

Since nightlife in New York has essentially shut down, drag queens are among the many people in the service industry who are out of work. Last week, the usually large audience turnouts at events like RuPaul’s Drag Race viewing parties started to dwindle. Then, as the possibility of a shelter in place order loomed, all of their shows were canceled. This prompted queer people with a large platform, like Netflix’s Fran Tirado, to crowdsource funds for the community.

But even in times of crisis, drag queens know how to make people smile. These days, they’re getting even more creative on social media. Below are a list of drag shows to watch — keep checking back as we update the list. As always (and now more than ever), tip your queens!
