Coming in 2021: “Baby Wildlife Warrior,” also known as Bindi Irwin’s first child.
“Chandler and I are proud to announce that we’re expecting!” Irwin, the 22-year-old daughter of the late Australian conservationist and “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, announced via Instagram on Tuesday. In the post, she and her husband of five months, professional wakeboarder Chandler Powell, are both outfitted in khaki Australia Zoo shirts and hold a matching infant-sized shirt. “Though I’m still in my first trimester, we really want you to be part of our journey from the beginning of this new life chapter,” she continued. In his own Instagram post, Powell expressed similar enthusiasm, proclaiming that “becoming a dad is the highlight of my life.”
“I cannot wait to embark on this new adventure and life chapter with my gorgeous wife, @bindisueirwin,” he continued. “Bee, you’re going to be the most amazing mother.”
The past year has been an eventful time for the couple. Last July, Powell proposed to Irwin on her 21st birthday, approximately six years after they met at Australia Zoo. (Powell was in Australia for a wakeboarding competition when he visited the zoo, where Bindi just so happened to be his tour guide. The rest is history.) This past March, they officially tied the knot in a small ceremony at the same zoo.
In the hours since the couple revealed that they’re expecting, they’ve already received an outpouring of congratulatory messages from the Irwin family. “I can’t believe I’m going to be an uncle!!! It’s such a happy time for our family,” Robert, Bindi’s 16-year-old brother, wrote on Instagram. On Twitter, Bindi’s mom, Terri, proclaimed that today is “the best day ever,” adding, “While I wish that Steve was here to share this beautiful moment, I know that he would be so proud.”
