The Republican National Convention so far has contained a lot of yelling and much feverish fearmongering about leftists’ intention to run America into the Godless ground. But there’s a clear winner in this war on our eardrums: Kimberly Guilfoyle, girlfriend to Donald Trump Jr. and a key fundraiser for the president, who used her speaking slot to scream into, or maybe more accurately at, the void.

Like so many of her fellow featured speakers, Guilfoyle painted a dire, inaccurate picture of the Democrats: decrying their “socialist agenda,” as well as the cautionary tale that is, according to Republicans tonight, California — or as Guilfoyle called it, the “land of discarded needles in parks.” She dispensed with all the Republican talking points with incredible, stunning loudness. She issued commands, such as a forceful, “We kneel in prayer and we stand for our flag.” She delivered words of bellowed encouragement: “You are CAPABLE, you are QUALIFIED, you are POWERFUL, AND YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE YOUR LIFE AND DETERMINE YOUR DESTINY.”

And with each passing line, between pauses for applause that did not come, given the virtual-only nature of the event, the timbre of her voice grew stronger until she came to the thunderous conclusion, howling her sonorous promise into an empty room: “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LEADERS AND FIGHTERS FOR FREEDOM AND LIBERTY AND THE AMERICAN DREAM, THE BEST. IS YET. TO COME.”

It was intense. It was a little frightening, although possibly not in the way she wanted it to be. It was, to quote one Trump campaign adviser’s comment to CNN, “weird.”
