Chunky chain necklaces have been floating around Instagram for the last few years. Phoebe Philo did a sparkly one for Celine, Bottega Veneta has one that’s popular with influencers, and Tiffany & Co.’s hefty one is a classic. Finding an affordable spin on the trend, though, is a little trickier. You want something that looks expensive, feels light on the skin, and won’t tarnish over time — like the one by the independent, Black-owned, Los Angeles-based brand BYCHARI.
You might have heard of Chari Cuthbert’s designs thanks to Michelle Obama, who wore the brand’s VOTE necklace back in October. That style sold out immediately (it’s restocked here) and BYCHARI established itself as a home for pretty jewelry that’s easy to wear. The brand has all the basics, like hoop earrings, delicate pearl pieces, and initial pendants, but her chunky chain stands out. With big rectangular links, the necklace is statement-y without being overwhelming. It’s lightweight and fits close to the neck (BYCHARI offers an extension piece as well) without feeling as though you’re being strangled. You can wear it over a turtleneck or under a white shirt, but it does wonders to jazz up a sweatshirt as well.
