Eons ago, in 2019, the world was introduced to one of the most powerful items of clothing ever known to man: Chris Evans’s cream-colored Aran sweater from Knives Out. The crew-neck was a marvel of physics, enormous and compact all at once. Its vast, tattered swaths of fabric could surely cover at least three football fields, and yet they clung firmly to Evans’s biceps. The effect was so striking that in theaters (large halls where people used to congregate together to enjoy the latest cinematic releases on a big screen), the sweater reportedly elicited gasps from audience members. Now, nearly two years later, Hollywood is preparing to introduce another, dare I say, even bigger sweater.
Like the first big sweater, this one is also a cream-colored knit. Unlike the first, this second one is a turtleneck, and the rippling mass to which it clings is not Chris Evans, but noted Big Boy Adam Driver, who wore it for his role as Italian businessman Maurizio Gucci in the upcoming Ridley Scott–produced crime drama House of Gucci. Driver stars alongside Lady Gaga, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, and Al Pacino, all of whom will presumably be wearing normal-size sweaters.
Images of Driver and, more significantly, the big sweater, were published this week in OK Magazine, which got paparazzi pictures of Driver and Gaga filming at a ski resort in the Italian Alps. The Daily Mail also published pictures of Driver zooming down the slopes for a scene in a blindingly white ski suit, though it’s unclear whether he was wearing the big sweater underneath. Lady Gaga posted her own picture of her and Driver (wearing the sweater) with the caption: “Signore e Signora Gucci.”
House of Gucci is currently set to be released in November 2021. Who knows if we’ll be able to watch it in theaters by then, or if we’ll still be quarantined in our own homes when we gasp and mutter, “Mamma mia … big sweater …”
