A lot has been (and will be) said about the nudity on Euphoria, but this comment from star Sydney Sweeney’s grandmother has got to be a first. The actor, who plays the unlucky-in-love Cassie Howard, revealed on Thursday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that not only do her grandparents watch the show, they attended the season-two premiere with her.
“I didn’t really think about it,” Sweeney told DeGeneres. “I was like, ‘It’s a Hollywood premiere! You’ve got to come!’” The actor apparently invited every family member she could, only to end up sitting next to them as they watched her nude scenes on a “ginormous screen.” Sweeney said she was “on the floor” with embarrassment. But she didn’t have to worry. It turns out her grandparents were more than supportive of her work — no matter how R-rated. “They said I have the best tits in Hollywood,” Sweeney said. And you don’t even have to take her word for it: Her grandmother, who was in the Ellen audience, gave a proud thumbs-up to show her approval.
As Cassie, Sweeney has filmed many sex scenes, so it’s definitely understandable that she may forget how shocking they can be to an extended family member. She has also spoken out about the unnecessary stigma attached to her nude scenes, calling out people who don’t value her acting because of them. “I’m very proud of my work in Euphoria. I thought it was a great performance. But no one talks about it because I got naked,” she said in an interview with The Independent. She also defended Cassie’s onscreen nudity, telling Teen Vogue it was “important to the story line and the character.” She added, “We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.”
