When COVID-19 first hit the U.S. in 2020, Jennifer Lopez was engaged to A-Rod and Ben Affleck was out running on Dunkin’ with Ana de Armas. Fast forward two years and Bennifer 2.0 (or is it 3.0?) is engaged. Life really does come at you fast.
Lopez confirmed the news late Friday, April 8, after she was spotted wearing a massive green diamond ring on her left ring finger while shopping with her daughter on Monday. According to TMZ, she flipped the ring around when she realized a photographer was nearby, hiding the diamond on the inside of her palm. And once that story was out, there was no keeping the engagement a secret.
Ben Affleck has yet to comment on the engagement, but on Friday, the singer teased a “major announcement” on Twitter and Instagram, sending fans to her newsletter fan site, OnTheJLo.com, where she shared video of the ring. A rep for Lopez also confirmed the news to People.
Lopez recently said that green was her “lucky color,” reportedly telling fans in a newsletter, “I’ve realized that there are many moments in my life where amazing things happened when I was wearing green.” I love that Ben is signed up for his fiancée’s newsletter. That’s how you know it’s true love.
Ben and Jen have been on the engagement track for a while. They recently bought an enormous, 17-bathroom mansion together, and they’ve been making public appearances and exhibiting PDA in front of paparazzi like it’s 2002. And, of course, fans of the couple have been waiting for them to get engaged since they got back together in May of 2021, yearning for a simpler time in the early aughts when Affleck proposed to the singer with a six-karat pink diamond in 2002. Back then, they called off the engagement in 2004 and both went their separate ways. Lopez went on to marry Mark Anthony and have two children; Affleck married Jennifer Garner and had three, but somehow, 20-odd years later, they’re back.
No word yet on how the proposal went down, but if I know anything about J.Lo, she was the one proposing. I’m imagining something like the mid-concert engagement scene of her newest rom-com Marry Me, bedazzled veil and all.
