For the most part, celebrities are not, in fact, like us. But they do meet people at parties and exchange phone numbers like average, horny people — specifically parties like the Met Gala, which can cost a minimum of $30,000 to get into.
As we now know, odd couple Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson met at the Met Gala last year. On a recent episode of the podcast Not Skinny But Not Fat (???), Kardashian revealed that Davidson approached her at the event to offer some advice about hosting Saturday Night Live. “He was like, ‘Take my number if you need anything,’” she said. “And I had gloves on, and I couldn’t get in my phone with the gloves, and I was like, ‘Oh, I have gloves! And I can’t …’ And he was like, ‘All right, cool,’ and walked away.”
Kardashian wore a head-to-toe black Balenciaga look to the gala that year, which made flirting slightly difficult. But Davidson had apparently been asking around for her number before the event, after hearing about her divorce from Kanye West, and was perhaps playing it cool that night — a tactic that unfortunately worked, because the rest is history.
Will any celebrities have a similar meet-cute at the Met Gala this year? (The dress code is certainly more conducive to courtship.) Anna Wintour takes her dinner-party seating charts very seriously, using them as opportunities to arrange business deals — and maybe even future romances. As writer Amy Odell reports in Anna, her biography of Wintour out on May 3, she once sat then–secret lovers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony back-to-back at separate tables so they could be near each other without suspicion.
It’s still hard to know which celebrities are going to show up this year — and who’s single — but allow us to ship some A-listers, just for shits. There is a good chance that the cast of Euphoria will make an appearance (minus Zendaya), and Angus Cloud’s love life is top of mind for the Cut staff. If we were in charge of the place settings, we’d place his name card next to Rihanna. They seem like they’d get along, and we’d like him to still be single by the end of the night. She might not be there, though, so maybe he can start a beautiful friendship with Billie Eilish or Zoë Kravitz instead — they’re both chill. I could also see him potentially wooing someone beyond his years. Maybe “Spacey” Kacey Musgraves? He could even melt Wintour’s heart. Who knows!
Olivia Rodrigo seems to be dating Zack Bia at the moment, but we think she can do better. We’re not saying Timothée Chalamet, but also not not Timothée Chalamet. Maybe Taylor Swift can set her up. Who else? Is Jack Harlow going/single? Are Ella Emhoff’s Secret Service agents sexy? Will Alexa Demie and Sydney Sweeney fight in the bathroom? Can Lil Nas X give Elon Musk tips about Twitter? All we can confidently say is that Julia Fox and Kardashian will probably be seated very, very far apart. Same for Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.
