On June 1, 2022 — the start of Pride Month — the American Girl brand announced, via Instagram, that it was rereleasing the classic Molly doll (while supplies last) with an interestingly worded caption: “To all the Molly girls in the world: We see you. And we celebrate you. A classic is back!”
I think the meaning here is obvious: Molly is gay. Welcome, Molly, to the community.
Molly Jean McIntire (an extremely gay name) was born on April 22, 1934 (a Taurus), though she remains 10 years old. She’s bad at math (hmmm), hates her straight hair (hmmm), and has a fixation on her teacher Miss Campbell (HMMM). She’s a skilled athlete, loves a good argyle sweater, and has bad eyesight. Normally I find it annoying when a random and very common trait such as liking iced coffee or being bad at driving is described as “gay,” but one must admit the evidence collected here is overwhelming in light of the doll brand’s announcement. While I personally was a Felicity girl (I enjoy the word petticoat and brass candleholders), I am happy to recognize Molly as my chosen family.
In response to the Cut’s request for comment on its decision to reanimate and celebrate Molly McIntire just in time for Pride month, the American Girl brand responded, “The new Molly collection releasing today is simply aligned with when all of our new summer product is debuting. Nothing more.” I take that to mean all other offerings released today — including this dragon, these camping outfits, and this dog — are gay as well. Congratulations to all!
