Amid this summer’s marathon wedding season, it’s always fun to see someone opt for a more casual ceremony. (See Bennifer’s slapdash Vegas wedding, or, even better, secret courthouse nuptials.) On Tuesday, “Page Six” reported that the Queen’s Gambit actress Anya Taylor-Joy secretly married musician Malcolm McRae in an “intimate courthouse wedding.”
It’s unclear exactly when this intimate wedding took place, but Taylor-Joy and McRae reportedly dated for a year before tying the knot. Taylor-Joy, who has previously called herself “quite a private person,” first alluded to their relationship in an April 2021 interview with Elle, in which she seemingly referred to McRae, one-half of the rock band More, as “my partner.” Taylor-Joy later opened up to British Vogue about the relationship, describing how the couple navigated long distance by appreciating “everyday mundane activities” like “going to the petrol station” and reading in mutual silence. “I finally found someone who will happily sit in silence with me reading,” Taylor-Joy told Vogue. “We’re basically 80 years old and seven at the same time and it works really well.” Other than the occasional film premiere makeout and the time McRae publicly dedicated a song to Taylor-Joy, the couple have kept a low profile. They first sparked engagement rumors last month, when Taylor-Joy was photographed wearing a green-diamond ring in Sydney.
Neither McRae nor Taylor-Joy have publicly commented on reports of their marriage, and there are few details about the ceremony itself, with Harper’s Bazaar reporting that the couple wed “somewhere in the U.S.” before flying back to Australia, where Taylor-Joy is currently shooting the film Furiosa. Per “Page Six,” the secret newlyweds were seen in Sydney on Monday, with Taylor-Joy wearing her ring, a sweater, and jeans. It’s all very low-key, but then sources say the couple plan to “have a bigger ceremony” when they return to the States. Congratulations to them, and I personally can’t wait to see what Taylor-Joy, patron saint of good style, chooses as her wedding dress.
