Not Even Rihanna Has Work-Life Balance Figured Out

Looking at Rihanna, one might think there’s nothing the pop star and makeup mogul can’t do. She can run Fenty Beauty, headline the Super Bowl halftime show, and raise her infant son all at the same time, but, as she revealed during a press conference ahead of the big game, not even RiRi has been able to successfully figure out the elusive work-life balance.

“The balance is almost impossible,” she said, speaking to Apple Music’s Nadeska. “No matter how you look at it, work is always something that’s going to rob you of time with your child. That’s the currency now. That’s where it goes.” The singer, who welcomed her first baby with A$AP Rocky in May, added that the “magnitude” of how much time each job will cost her with her son weighs heavily. “When you make a decision of what you’re going to say yes to, it has to be worth it,” she said. And when she got the call asking her to headline the Super Bowl halftime show three months after giving birth, she decided it was worth it.

“When you become a mom, there’s something that just happens, where you feel like you can take on the world. You can do anything, and the Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world,” she said, adding that she felt it would be “important for my son to see that.” She later expanded on her reasons for doing the show, saying, “Representation for immigrants, representation for my country: Barbados. Representing for Black women everywhere. I think that’s really important, that’s key for people to see those possibilities, and I’m honored to be here.”

Of course, RiRi used the press conference to tease her halftime set list, calling it “the biggest challenge” and noting that she had trouble “trying to cram 17 years of music into 13 songs.” Some fans might be disappointed if their favorites don’t make the cut, but the singer promised that the show would ultimately be “a celebration of my catalogue.” As long as she doesn’t bring out Johnny Depp, I’ll be happy.
