North West Is Laying the Groundwork for a Skin-Care Empire

Plenty of cultures have some special way of celebrating when a child hits a particular milestone — bat mitzvahs, sweet 16s, quinceañeras. In the grand tradition of the Kardashian family, the customary way to mark a child’s passage into, well, some era of maturity is with a new business venture. So it’s only natural — in fact, I might argue, a bit late — that North West, the 9-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Ye, is laying the groundwork for not one but four product lines.

Per the Sun, Kardashian recently applied for four new trademarks in North’s name: two for “advertising services” and “entertainment,” another for a toy brand, and one for a skin-care line that will reportedly include moisturizers, creams, cleansers, serums, oils, bubble bath, fragrance, hair care, and bodywash.

If you told me North West was selling something under her name, I would probably assume it was black and/or studded clothing, but a beauty line actually makes sense if you think about it. North appreciates poop, which is rapidly becoming a major player in the wellness industry. She understands hair, having used it in her art. Beyond her immense wealth (always a helpful thing to have when it comes to skin care), she also has cultural capital in spades, something the influencer industry would appreciate.

In fact, I see nothing stopping her from building a goth wellness empire, but it’s not clear when North plans to capitalize on the many trademarks under her name, considering Kardashian has been expanding the business portfolios of her infant children for years. She also filed a clothing trademark for North in 2019. Last July, she got nine new trademarks for Chicago and Saint. Later last year, she applied for a whopping 12 trademarks for 3-year-old Psalm that covered everything from vitamins and car seats to jewelry, books, bags, furniture, apparel, and entertainment brands. She’s not the only one: Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian have also trademarked some of their children’s names.

Maybe I just have Succession on the brain, but I’m sensing a nascent sibling rivalry here. Pressure makes diamonds, I guess? Even goth ones.
