We Can’t Quit the Utilitarian Trend

It’s not just cargo pants and drawstring waistbands — promise.

If you’ve ever lamented the lack of pockets in your clothes, know that the fashion gods have heard your cries: Functional, utilitarian pieces like cargo pants, quilted vests, and yes, dresses with pockets (!) are one of spring’s biggest fashion trends — and the look is surprisingly wearable, even for the most feminine dressers among us.

But unlike the preppy collared styles or low-waisted ‘90s looks that dominated last spring, the utilitarian trend is harder to pinpoint. That’s because it’s not just one thing, but rather, any clothing item that merges practicality with comfort. Think drawstring ties that make a pair of trousers adjustable; diamond quilting that ups the warmth factor on a cropped vest; or the waterproof coating on your favorite bomber jacket.

The good news is that the utilitarian trend doesn’t have to be squarely casual: Pair your cargo pants with pointed-toe slingbacks and a blazer and you’ve got yourself an office-ready look. Or throw a puffer vest atop a silk midi skirt for a day-to-night weekend vibe.
