Get ready to meet the next generation of designers. The Supima Design Competition returns to New York Fashion Week for its 16th year this September. Supima, the nonprofit brand that promotes the use of American-grown Pima cotton around the world, organizes the annual competition to introduce up-and-coming designers to the fashion industry.
Eight students from leading design schools across the country will compete for the chance to win $10,000. Designer and creative director Jeremy Scott will host the live show and will be joined by a prestigious panel of judges, composed of leaders and influencers across the industry, to select the winner.
Each finalist will be challenged to create a womenswear capsule collection using premium Supima cotton fabrics, including velveteen, twill, shirting, jersey, and denim. They will be mentored by CFDA award winner and evening wear designer Bibhu Mohapatra, and have the opportunity to learn how to translate their designs for the runway to wow the judges.
Finalists include Amber Kuia from Academy of Art University, Carla Pierini from Drexel University, Alexander Ziemba from Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Hee Jin Hwang from Fashion Institute of Technology, Wendy Weng from Kent State University, Tianze Wu from Parsons School of Design, The New School, Sahara Clemons from Rhode Island School of Design, and Mariana Espinosa from School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The live runway presentation will take place on September 7 at 3 p.m. EST and will be available to stream on the Supima Instagram page.
Editor’s note: If you missed the livestream, you can view the full show on the Supima website. Designer Carla Pierini from Drexel University took home the coveted prize.
