“Throughout the years, I have learned that you don’t need to spend lots of money to have a great beauty regimen,” says Caroline Maguire. The Shopbop fashion director is talking specifically about three of her favorite products — her cleanser, morning moisturizer, and nighttime moisturizer, each of which costs less than $12.
Maguire takes a high-low approach to skin care, mingling drugstore buys with beloved-but-pricey staples like Sunday Riley’s Good Genes and luxury treatments from celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas. She acknowledges the learning curve in beauty, remembering her own skin-care mistakes: “I would find myself waking up with blemishes or dryness and quickly learned this was from leaving makeup on from the night prior,” she says. Her biggest regret, though: neglecting sunscreen. Now she advises, “As I get older, I wish I had slathered on SPF throughout the years. Beyond reducing wrinkles, it’s so important for your health to protect from the sun. Trust me, your 40-year-old self will thank you!”
Eventually, Maguire hopes to make her routine 100 percent clean. Below are the products she relies on as she makes the transition, including an enzyme peel that smells of sweet cherries, a retinol alternative, and the SPF she never leaves home without.
“I live for this cleanser! I love that it doesn’t leave any film or residue. It was recommended by my dermatologist and is fail-proof. It has been around for years and is great after using a makeup remover to cleanse your skin before applying any serums or moisturizers.”
The Daily A.M. Moisturizer
“I apply this once a week. The best part is the scent — it smells delicious! The smell of sweet cherries is reason enough to use this. A friend of mine first told me about the Naturopathica brand, and this was the first product I ever used of theirs. I wet my face prior to applying this peel, and let it sit for a minute or so before rinsing off.”
“Over the summer I tried a new vitamin C serum from Sunday Riley, and my face completely broke out. My skin wasn’t able to handle it. My dermatologist explained that my skin is sensitive and can’t take on multiple new products at once. I was testing out a new face moisturizer at the same time and my skin was on overdrive protecting itself. So I switched to a more gentle vitamin C that my dermatologist recommended. This one is by far the best for my skin. It’s loaded with antioxidants, which has helped to approve the overall appearance of my skin. There’s chamomile extract in it as well, which helps to calm my skin rather than irritate it.”
“My go-to night serum. I love that Joanna Vargas’s products are powerful yet soothing. If I need an additional boost or added moisturizer, I’ll use this serum right after cleansing so that it sinks in. I discovered it when I went to her spa in New York for a facial. I love that I’m able to achieve a youthful complexion without an aggressive retinol cream.”
The P.M. Moisturizers
“I first started using this moisturizer when I purchased their cleanser. Like all of their products, it’s gentle and gets the job done. If I don’t have time for a full night routine, I always make sure to at least put some of this on after washing my face.”
The Face Mist
“This is the final step in my skin-care routine for both morning and night. I love that it instantly hydrates without making me look too dewy. I use this year-round and love that it’s made for combination skin! It balances out your skin while hydrating, and the lavender and honey smell amazing. I wish Naturopathica created this mist in travel portions — I would carry it with me on the plane.”
